New Release Round-Up 06-16-17
JASON ISBELL AND THE 400 UNIT - The Nashville Sound - Southeastern Records
Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, guitarist Jason Isbell and his mighty band, The 400 Unit, have announced the June 16th release of the highly anticipated new album, The Nashville Sound. The Nashville Sound is the follow up to 2015’s critically acclaimed Something More Than Free, which won two Grammy Awards (Best Americana Album & Best American Roots Song “24 Frames”) and two Americana Music Association Awards (Album of The Year & Song of The Year, “24 Frames”). Without exaggeration, Jason Isbell has become one of the most respected and celebrated songwriters of his generation. He possesses an incredible penchant for identifying and articulating some of the deepest, yet simplest, human emotions, and turning them into beautiful poetry through song. Isbell sings of the everyday human condition with heartfelt, and sometimes brutal honesty, and the new album is no exception. The album will be available for a limited time at an Indie Exclusive Low Price and also as an Indie Exclusive Limited Edition LP + Songbook.
LORDE - Melodrama - Republic
Following Lorde's highly-anticipated return with the new single Green Light, the singer releases her second full-length album Melodrama via LAVA/Republic Records. Melodrama includes the brand new track Liability, produced by Lorde and Jack Antonoff, and the current single Green Light, produced by Lorde, Jack Antonoff, and Frank Dukes. Green Light immediately launched the GRAMMY® Award-winning singer to the top worldwide trending topic on Facebook and Twitter, amassing an incredible 2 billion impressions on Twitter alone within its first 24 hours. Rolling Stone praised her return single as a reflection of her own emerging adulthood and The FADER declared the track as a true pop anthem made for both earbud strutting and the club. Pitchfork named Green Light best new track, concluding the euphoria of Green Light is a new look for this 20-year-old who first appeared as a shadowy teenaged mystic. She doles it out carefully, true to her inability to find closure. But when it hits, she is radiant.
STEVE EARLE & THE DUKES - So You Wanna Be An Outlaw - Warner Bros
So You Wanna Be An Outlaw, Steve Earle's first album for Warner Bros. Records since 1997’s El Corazón, explores his country songwriting roots and features collaborations with Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, and Miranda Lambert. “There’s nothing ‘retro’ about this record,” Earle says. “I’m just acknowledging where I’m coming from.” So You Wannabe an Outlaw is the first recording he has made in Austin, TX. Earle has lived in New York City for the past decade. “Look, I’m always gonna be a Texan, no matter what I do,” he says. “And I’m always going to be somebody who learned their craft in Nashville. It’s who I am.”
RIDE - Weather Diaries - Wichita Records
Ride's first album in over twenty years, Weather Diaries, is released via Wichita Recordings. The album was produced by legendary DJ, producer and remixer Erol Alkan, and is packed with all the classic elements that made Ride one of the defining bands of the early 90s. Trembling distortion, beautiful harmonies, pounding rhythms, shimmering soundscapes and great songwriting all combine to make an album thats ambitious in scope, timeless and thoroughly addictive. The album will be released through Wichita Recordings and sees the band reunited with label co-founders Mark Bowen and Dick Green, who worked with Ride during the bands early years on Creation Records. It also brings the band back together with mixer Alan Moulder (Arctic Monkeys, Smashing Pumpkins, The Killers) who mixed their seminal 1990 album Nowhere and produced its follow up Going Blank Again.
THE DRUMS - Abysmal Thoughts - Anti
The Drums are a four-piece indie pop band from Brooklyn, NY. Jonny Pierce is the main founding member, as well as the singer, songwriter and producer. The band heavily channels the sound of The Smiths & Joy Division/New Order and they put on a highly regarded live show. Jonny found creative inspiration and challenge in writing infectious pop music that lyrically confronts darker issues than to sonically be expected. As he grew as an artist, he became more involved in this dichotomy, finding more interesting ways to do so. Abysmal Thoughts is perhaps his best work yet - catchy and carefree at times, yet dark and atmospheric at others, strung together more seamlessly than in the past. The band has received critical praise of their past work & grown to acquire a very loyal fanbase in the US and strongly in South America and the UK. They have over half a million followers on Facebook, which is a strong indication of their following.
FLEET FOXES - Crack-up - Nonesuch
Fleet Foxes release Crack-up, its long-awaited and highly anticipated third album on Nonesuch Records. Crack-Up comes six years after the 2011 release of Helplessness Blues and nearly a decade since the band's 2008 self-titled debut. Fleet Foxes has released the album track "Third of May / Ōdaigahara," a nearly nine-minute epic powered by piano and electric twelve-string guitar, string quartet, and the group's trademark sparkling harmonies. All eleven of the songs on Crack-Up were written by Robin Pecknold. The album was co-produced by Pecknold and Skyler Skjelset, his longtime bandmate, collaborator, and childhood friend. Crack-Up was recorded at various locations across the United States between July 2016 and January 2017: at Electric Lady Studios, Sear Sound, The Void, Rare Book Room, Avast, and The Unknown. Phil Ek mixed the album, at Sear Sound, and it was mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound. Fleet Foxes is Robin Pecknold (vocals, multi-instrumentalist), Skyler Skjelset (multi-instrumentalist, vocals), Casey Wescott (multi-instrumentalist, vocals), Christian Wargo (multi-instrumentalist, vocals), and Morgan Henderson (multi-instrumentalist).
CHEAP TRICK - We're All Alright! - Big Machine Records
Cheap Trick's 18th studio album, We're All Alright! was co-produced by the band and their longtime collaborator, GRAMMY® Award winner Julian Raymond (Glen Campbell, Fastball). The album will be available in standard and deluxe editions, with the latter including three additional bonus tracks, among them a kaleidoscopic cover of The Move's Blackberry Way.
ICED EARTH - Incorruptible - Century Media
After nearly three dedicated decades, Schaffer, drummer Brent Smedley, vocalist Stu Block, bassist Luke Appleton, and new guitarist Jake Dreyer have assembled the fiercest Iced Earth record since 1996 milestone The Dark Saga and 1998’s chart-blazer Something Wicked This Way Comes. Titled ‘Incorruptible’, Iced Earth’s 12th record is inspired not by things political but by things personal. Since Plagues of Babylon landed in 2014 to heaps of praise and chart-topping success, Schaffer and team have weathered proverbial storms. Management shake-ups, Schaffer’s well-publicized and very serious neck surgery—he’s since fully recovered—and lineup shifts all played positively into Incorruptible. But that wasn’t always the case. Written primarily by Schaffer over the course of several months — a process he calls “typical”— Incorruptible finds Iced Earth pivoting off everything they’ve learned—going all the way back to 1990’s Iced Earth—to come away with an album that feels and sounds superlatively heavy metal. And definitely like Iced Earth.
JESSICA HERNANDEZ & THE DELTAS - Telephone - Instant Records
The Detroit band made their Instant Records debut with 2013’s DEMONS and 2014's SECRET EVIL. Hernandez, a second generation Cuban and Mexican-American, felt it her duty to further explore her own Hispanic heritage on The Deltas' sophomore recording. Personal and provocative, Telephone / Telefono is a milestone achievement for the band known for their soundclash of Goth pop, Latin rock, psychedelic surf, punk cabaret, dirty dancehall, and Hernandez's vocal power.
Album is available on vinyl and in Spanish as part of a Double LP Set.
